The fall of Constantinople was an epic confrontation that Hellenism experienced as a decisive collective trauma. It ended an era and profoundly shook its contemporaries.
In its aftermath, legends took root—narratives that preserved a residue of hope and offered consolation to the defeated. Yet one mystery still endures: the fate of the last emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos Dragases.
Official historiography often remains trapped in stylized, rigid patterns of heroism or disgrace. By contrast, the chronicles and correspondence of those who lived through the events—mostly Latins—let a different story surface: perhaps less heroic, but far more human.
Andreas Takis is a law professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, a Visiting Fellow at Flinders University, and an amateur storyteller.
