A Festival Hellenika event presented by Professor Lucy Potter
In this richly engaging afternoon, Professor Lucy Potter will discuss the origins of Shakespeare’s drama in the complex nexus of ancient Rome’s appropriation of the literary traditions of ancient Greece. Her focus is Shakespeare’s reception of Roman literature through the prism of the accomplishments of ancient Greek epic and drama, and the models of imitation that these works inspired in the ancient Romans’ desire to ‘perfect’ and thereby supersede Greek culture. While Shakespeare’s favourite author—Ovid—was Roman, his epic poem Metamorphoses helped Shakespeare master an artistic process that is rooted in classical Greek culture: the art of changing literature through continuity with the past. The talk will be preceded by select scenes from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream presented by the Logos Group.
