In Bed with the Greeks
Presented by OEEGA (Organisation of Hellene & Hellene Cypriot Women of Australia) in association with Festival Hellenika & South Australia’s History Festival.
This intriguing exhibition provides a peek into the bedroom customs of the traditional Greek household. Since ancient times the Greeks recognised the importance of sleep not just as a time of rest but as a healing practice, and as testified by Homer in The Odyssey, “There is a time for many words, and there is also a time for sleep”.
It is not surprising therefore, that Hypnos god of sleep was a revered god In Greek mythology. While it unfolds the decor of intimate bedroom interiors, with the use of regional textiles and bed covers known as Paploma, this exhibition examines the varied cultural practices and traditions associated with sleep and bedrooms, such as the decorative marriage bed and the health benefits of the afternoon Siesta.
