Rare photos from the archive of the Greek Cultural Centre in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Presented by the Organisation of Hellene and Hellene-Cypriot Women of Australia (SA) Inc. – OEEGA and supported by the Greek Museum of Adeaide Inc and Festival Hellenika

At the end of the Greek Civil War (1946-9) 12,000 combatants from the Greek Communist Army were smuggled from Albania to the USSR and settled in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Stalin orchestrated the move where the combatants were resettled in former POW camps, and many were not allowed to return to Greece until an amnesty in 1982.

Dr Helen Vatsikopoulos (academic, journalist and co-curator of the exhibition) and Mark Corcoran went to Tashkent in search of information about her aunt who was one of the exiled Greeks in Tashkent.
